Playing football teaches life skills. It is a team effort where the skill of an individual player helps the team but does not achieve the “win” all by itself. A good player can make a difference in the team, but one player cannot win the game by himself.
On the playing field, the length of the football creates a line of scrimmage across the entire field that separates the two teams: an offence vs a defense. No member of either team may be in the neutral zone which is the length of the football along the line of scrimmage before the ball is snapped. The center of the offensive line hands or passes the football to a player in the backfield, most often to the quarterback. There must be 7 offensive players within one yard to the neutral zone. Generally, there will be a left and right guard on either side of the center. a left and right tackle, and a left and right end.
There will be 4 players in the backfield that must be at least one yard off the neutral zone. Generally, you would have a quarterback, one or two running backs, and one or two wingbacks, To confuse the defense, the lineup of all of these players changes, but you must have at least 7 offensive players within one yard of the neutral zone.
The defense will also have 11 players, but they can line up almost anywhere they want. They review the offensive players’ setup and will adjust their line up to stop the offense.
To begin the game, the defensive team kicks the football to the offensive team. The offense tries to carry the ball through the defense to the goal line behind the defense. The football field is 100 yards long. Assuming the offense ran only to the 25-yard line before being tackled, the offense gets 4 downs to gain 10 yards to earn a new first down. The offense repeats the process until they reach the goal line. If they do not gain the 10 yards in 3 plays, they will often kick the ball to the other team to gain field position. Now the other team is the offensive team. They try to gain at least 10 yards in 3 plays or kick it back to the other team.
With 11 players on each team, you can see that it takes planning to have all team members doing their part. The offensive players try to block the defensive players in a particular way for the offensive back to gain more yards. If any offensive player misses a block, the offensive running back that is carrying the ball may be tackled for little or no gain. If everyone makes a successful block, the running back should score a touchdown. It takes excellent teamwork and timing for plays to be successful.
Football players must learn to work together to be successful. They learn life skills when learning football skills. They have their duties that have a tremendous effect on the team’s success. It does not matter whether they play for a Jr High football team or a National Football league team, they have to do their job well and learn how to help other teammates. If life skills are learned in football, they will help the players live better lives as adults.
